Backing Paper Thickness and Mechanical Stability
The uniformity of backing paper thickness is a critical factor for precise die-cutting depth control. For example, a glassine backing paper with a thickness of 32~35μm must have a fluctuation of no more than ±1μm (with conventional backing paper generally controlled within ±3μm). If this range is exceeded, the cutting depth error in the same batch of labels may exceed the allowable tolerance, leading to quality issues. For instance, thicker areas of the backing paper may result in incomplete cutting of the face stock, while thinner areas may cause damage to the backing paper.
Moreover, the tensile strength of the backing paper must be compatible with the tension in the die-cutting and labeling processes. For a 35μm glassine backing paper, the tensile strength should be ≥2.5N/15mm, and the elongation at break should be ≥3%, ensuring that excessive local tension during die-cutting feeding or labeling will not cause the backing paper to break.
Control of Face Stock and Adhesive Layer Properties
The uniformity and extensibility of the self-adhesive face stock directly affect die-cutting results. For instance, a 50μm PET face stock must maintain a thickness fluctuation of ≤±2μm. Any deviation beyond this range can lead to incomplete cuts (in thicker areas) or overcuts (in thinner areas). Additionally, the longitudinal elastic modulus of the face stock should be ≥3GPa to ensure that its elongation under feeding tension does not exceed 0.2%, preventing die-cutting position deviations caused by material stretching.
The uniformity of the adhesive coating is equally critical. The fluctuation in adhesive thickness should be ≤±1μm to prevent issues such as tool adhesion due to overly thick adhesive layers or insufficient adhesion in areas where the adhesive layer is too thin.

Environmental Adaptability of Materials
The dimensional stability of self-adhesive materials changes with temperature and humidity, impacting die-cutting accuracy. For example, when BOPP humidity increases from 40% to 60%, its transverse dimension may expand by about 0.15%. Without humidity compensation, label size deviation may occur.
Thus, material stability is essential for precise die-cutting. Optimal conditions are 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5% RH. Under these, face stock shrinkage ≤0.1% and backing paper expansion ≤0.05%. In ultra-high-speed labeling (≥300 bottles/min), even minor die-cutting flaws can cause misalignment or breakage. Therefore, die-cutting tension, speed, and alignment must be adjusted in advance for accuracy.
Edge Precision Adaptability of Labels
During high-speed labeling, labels must pass through sharp picking blades, vacuum suction cups, or mechanical claws for rapid transfer. If the die-cutting edges have burrs (≥0.05mm) or rough edges, this may lead to air leakage in the suction cups (reducing vacuum adhesion by 30%) or label misalignment. To ensure precise labeling, the edge flatness error of the die-cut labels must be controlled within ≤0.03mm, with no "stringing" phenomenon (where the adhesive layer is not completely cut, resulting in fine threads).
Dynamic Adaptation of Backing Paper Strength
The traction tension in ultra-high-speed labeling machines typically ranges from 1.5 to 2N, with a high fluctuation frequency (approximately 10Hz), requiring the backing paper to have sufficient fatigue resistance. The transverse tensile strength of 35μm glassine backing paper should retain ≥90% of its original strength (2.5N/15mm before die-cutting), and it should withstand at least 50 fold cycles (180° bend) to avoid breakage caused by repeated bending at the labeling machine's turning rollers.
Consistency of Die-Cutting Spacing
The die-cutting spacing between labels (waste edge width) must be consistent within ±0.05mm; otherwise, high-speed waste removal may cause the waste band to break or labels to be torn incorrectly. For continuous labels, the cumulative die-cut spacing error should be controlled within ≤0.1mm/10m, requiring the die-cutting equipment's feeding precision to be perfectly synchronized with the tool's circumferential positioning accuracy.
